Western Riverside gets the go ahead
The Secretary of State has decided not to call in the planning application to develop Bath Western Riverside giving the green light for development to take place on the former Stothert & Pitt site.
Crest Nicholson now have the green light to start to redevelop this former industrial area that has run into disrepair over recent years. It is our understanding that Crest will be seeking to start work on the site in the next few months.
The first phase of the development will involve the building of over 300 new homes including over 90 homes either for rent or affordable homes that are being built in conjunction with Somer Housing.
Attached is the letter from the Government office of the South West (GOSW) that gives Bath & North East Somerset Council the go ahead to grant planning consent for this development. non_intervention_letter.doc

Clean up Demanded
Councillor Sharon Ball has complained to Bath & North East Somerset Council about the street cleaning in some of our local roads.
Sharon said: When I was out delivering leaflets on Saturday I was horrified to see the amount of litter on the streets in Albany Road, Loxton Drive, King Georges Road, Brook Road and The Triangle. I have also reported similar problems with litter at Lymore Gardens after receiving phone calls from local residents".
"I have contacted the council and asked that they get this area cleared up as soon as possible it is not fair on residents to have to live in this mess and I have asked for the area to be monitored in future to ensure that it stays clean".

Recycling not collected
Areas of Westmoreland have not had their recycling collected this week due to a break-in at the ECT Recycling depot at Keynsham over the weekend.
The effect of this was that none of the regular round vehicles were available for use on Monday morning.
ECT have managed to borrow a number of vehicles from other areas and have hired some vehicles too but the recycling rounds have been significantly affected due to delay and the fact that these vehicles are not designed to take the range of materials we collect meaning they need to return to tip more often.
New locks are being fitted to the trucks and it is expected that this will be completed on Wednesday.
Around half of Monday's rounds were completed and it is likely that Tuesday will also not be completed, if it is then ECT will return to clear up some of those streets remaining from Monday.
The Council have agreed that, anyone still waiting from Monday or Tuesday on Wednesday will not be done until next week - otherwise the disruption could carry on all week and people may be given promises that can't be met.
The aim is to return to normal service on Wednesday providing the lock repairs are done as scheduled.

Speed Monitor installed.
At last we can report some good news for local residents of Lansdown View who have been subjected to speeding motorists for a long time now.
We have been able to persuade Bath & North East Somerset Council to install a new variable speed monitor on Lansdown view that will light up and ward drivers if they are going too fast.
This should help with the traffic control issues in this area and hopefully give residents a respite from the screeching of brakes and damage to their cars that they have had to suffer.
The New speed monitor is one of the Six to Fix items that we identified with local residents that need to be sorted and this is just one small step in improving our local area.

New Street Lighting & Bridge update
The Council are proposing to put in new street lighting to replace the old lighting in Lymore Ave, Claude Ave & West Ave with The new lighting is more environmentally friendly using less power to operate and also produces a white light that allows people to be seen more clearly and this in crime prevention gain.
The Scheme Specifics are attached and a link to the Bath & North East Somerset council Street Lighting Policy.

The Bridge that crosses the river Avon at the bottom of Fielding's Road is now closed and will stay closed for the next thirteen weeks for bridge repairs.
We are concerned however that people have tried to cross this bridge including school children in the morning. It must be stressed that this bridge is dangerous and a potential death trap for any one that crosses it so please keep off.

Six to Fix Update
We intend to report back on the Six to Fix items that the residents of Westmoreland ward told us that they wanted to see sorted out and we have agreed to campaign on these items to try to bring them to fruition by the next elections in 2011. A report will appear here on a monthly basis on the progress that we are making
1) Litter and Rubbish was a Major contention that needed to be sorted out and we have made progress in this by having large areas of litter and rubbish removed from many streets. In King Georges Road working with Bath & North East Somerset Council and Somer Housing with have managed to get all the undergrowth cut back and dead trees removed as well as litter removed and at the Linear Way.
2) We are disappointed to report that our new conservative administration have been dragging their feet on the introduction of 20mph zones outside our Schools and we have again reminded them of our residents desire to have these 20mph zones in as soon as possible for the safety of all our children.
3) The Bath Western Riverside is an area that we agreed needed to be correct for the community and we can tell you that this matter has moved on greatly since we last reported on this item and that planning permission has now been granted to Crest Nicholson for phase one of the development to build over 300 new homes many of these badly needed Social Housing that will be built in conjunction with Somer Housing.
Other Phases of this will follow including building a new School a rapid transit system and further homes and community facilities. Although we are not entirely happy with the development we feel that there is much potential to be able to get a development that will benefit our community but a lot of work still needs to be done before this one is correct.
4) The issue of Student accommodation is always a controversial one for our community as in peak times 28% of the resident population is students and it is important that the correct mix of student accommodation is provided and that regular communication is established with the community. Our new conservative administration at a stroke destroyed the close working relationship that we had been developing with the community and Student population by scrapping the well respected Student Liaison committee.
They did however when they realised that they had made a mistake established a working group with the Universities of which they exert political control although but we feel that this is not good enough and have asked that meetings that both the community and Students can again become directly engaged are established.
We also need to ensure that all student homes are registered and fit for purpose, as a happy student fits well into our community. There is a planning application by Unite that looks to build further purpose built student accommodation on the lower Bristol road next to Waterside court that already Houses over 300 students we will take an active interest in this one as the proposals that we have seen are for year 2 & 3 Students and if this happens it will free up more houses for family homes.
5) The Matter of School playing fields for our local Schools is moving on rapidly and we hope to be able to report shortly on this issue.
6) Traffic flows and speed controls are items that we are still working on and with our Conservative administration cutting budgets these are becoming harder to achieve, however we have managed to get pollution monitoring of traffic for the whole of Bath established which will highlight some of the problems that we have along the Lower Bristol Road. We are still pushing for permanent speed monitors on Lansdown View, Brook Road and Millmead Road.
