Traingle & Brook Road

I have asked the council to update the No entry sign at The Triangle at the bridge that leads to Brook Road.

As can be seen the sign is very faded and in need of replacement, It is even more important as we have an issue with cars and lorries that go over this bridge in the wrong direction.

Westmoreland Residents Survey

Councillor Sharon Ball and Local campaigner Sarah Moore have been out talking to residents about what affects them in the area, and have been asking for our annual survey to be completed to help us provide more assistance where required.

We have decided that it may be easier for some residents to complete this on-line and as such, we have created an electronic version that can be accessed here.

We would like as much feedback from residents as possible to ensure your views are taken into consideration when various items that would affect you are discussed at council meetings.

Please can you take the time to either complete the on-line version or the paper version that may have come through your door.

If you have any questions, please contact us.

Get your HMO licence application in now

B&NES Council Housing Services have already received over 150 applications for HMO licences
under the new Additional HMO Licensing scheme.  Over 1,000 applications are expected to be received before the end of the year, after which a licence will be required for HMOs in some areas of Bath.

Landlords of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) in areas centred on the wards of Oldfield, Westmoreland, and parts of Widcombe will require a licence from 1 January 2014.  Some areas adjoining these Wards will are also included in the scheme.

The new scheme will provide landlords, residents and occupants with better information on the HMOs near them. It will also encourage landlords to ensure their HMOs are safer, healthier and managed according to a consistent set of standards across the scheme area.

Time is ticking for those landlords in areas where an additional licence is required. Bath & North East Somerset Council urges those HMO landlords to visit our website to apply for the licence. If a landlord isn’t sure whether or not they require either a mandatory or new additional licence, our Housing Team are a click, email or phone call away.”

The proposed new rules will guarantee good standards for everyone living in smaller HMOs and drive out bad landlords. Local people will be the ones who benefit from these new rules. Neighbours will be able to have their complaints resolved more quickly because the Council will have more powers to act.

For more information about both the existing mandatory HMO and new additional HMO licensing schemes and access an application form go to www.bathnes.gov.uk/hmos or email housing@bathnes.gov.uk or call 01225 396444.

Summary of the requirements of the new rules
  • Landlords will have to show that their properties are well managed and safe;
  • Tenants will enjoy improved standards, meaning their homes are safer and healthier;
  • Neighbours will be able to look at a public register of HMOs to find out who manages rented properties near them, so they will know who to contact if problems occur;
  • Landlords and property owners will receive better support, help and advice from the Council. They will know that consistent standards are being enforced across the area and that bad landlords will not be tolerated;
  • The Council will have better enforcement powers and be able to ensure that properties are run by good landlords who comply with all the necessary regulations;
Where landlords are unwilling to or are unable to meet the requirements of licensing, the Council could step in to manage the properties.

Inverness Road residents

We had a very busy morning yesterday talking to local residents in Inverness Road and are now attempting to resolve some of the issues that were raised with us.

There is concern form some residents about the Linear Way that will soon be opened up via the old railway bridge about how the cyclists and pedestrians will respect the neighbouring houses.

Issues were also raised about graffiti and hedge cutting on the Linear Way and we are attempting to resolve these issues.

A matter of an empty house has been referred to the councils empty property section to resolve.

The matter of the lane from Bellotts Road to Brook Road has again been raised and we have asked for an investigation about having the graffiti removed from the buildings along this path.

Westmoreland Walkabout

We have had a very busy morning around Westmoreland today.  We have been delivering the latest tri-ward focus and also clearing up some of the streets.

We have picked up litter on Lymore Avenue, Cynthia Avenue, Claude Avenue and Crandale Road. Collecting 3 bags of rubbish from these roads.

We spoke with a number of residents that were pleased to see us out on a Sunday clearing their streets, making the area a cleaner place to live.

We have identified a number of other roads in the area that need a clean up and will be aiming to do these over the next week.

Pot Holes & Blocked Drains

During a walk around Westmoreland yesterday, we came across quite a few large pot holes, that have got worse with the recent heavy rain.

We have asked for the potholes on Coronation Avenue, Lymore Avenue and Burnham Road to be repaired as a matter of urgency and hopefully before any more bad weather comes.

We have also requested tha the blocked drains on Coronation Avenue are cleared as soon as possible to ensure any rain can clear away easily.

If you are aware of any issues that you would like us to look into for you, please get in touch.

New Access Ramp

Cllrs Nigel Roberts & Sharon Ball with Sarah Moore at site of proposed ramp
We are pleased to confirm, although not in the position we requested, a new access ramp will be created leading from Bridge Road onto the Linear Park shared path below.  The ramp will be coming out next to number 5 Bridge Road.

We have also received confirmation that a safety railing that Councillor Sharon Ball has requested, will be installed on the footpath where the ramp will meet the existing pavement. This will prevent cyclists and pedestrians from coming straight off the ramp across the footpath and onto the road.

This work is scheduled to start shortly after Christmas, with a view to work being completed before the end of March 2014.

Bath's Seagull problem resolved ?

I was pleased to hear the the Bath Seagull problem was resolved only to find out that in a report to the councils scrutiny panel they had renamed them as urban gulls. So now we have a problem with urban Gulls to resolve. All joking aside There are now only four weeks until Bath residents, business owners and visitors come together to discuss how to tackle the urban gull population in the city. Bath and North East Somerset Council is hosting a scrutiny inquiry day focused on reducing the gulls’ food source caused by litter and exposed waste. The event is being held from 9.30am until 3.30pm on Wednesday 27 November 2013 at the Guildhall and is open to all. The morning will focus on providing information and will include presentations by experts, council officers and government representatives. The afternoon will include a workshop session for everyone to have their say in the practical recommendations that are put forward. As part of the preparation for the day, the council is particularly keen to hear from local businesses on their experiences and action already being taken. An online survey has been made available at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/BKCTJ9D The survey should take about five minutes to complete and it is hoped as many local businesses as possible will take the time to share their views. The inquiry is a public meeting and the council wishes to encourage broad interest and participation in the day. Although it is not obligatory to submit statements in advance, it is recommended that those who wish to speak do so due to the level of interest in this subject. If you do wish to submit your statement in advance in writing, please ensure they are received no later than five working days before. For further information on the day or to submit a written statement, please contact: scrutiny@bathnes.gov.uk; Policy Development and Scrutiny Team, Bath & North East Somerset Council, High Street, Bath, BA1 5AW; or call 01225 396053.
