Bookers new paint job

We wrote to bookers for residents that were upset about the proposal to paint Bookers in Brook road Bright Orange in their refurbishment plans.
Although they have converted 45 branches to their new colour of bright orange and been happy with the results they also appreciate working in the local comminity that the colour may have an effect on residents in the conservation area.
They have reviewed their plans and taken people's concerns into account therefore propose a grey/shell cladding and limit the bright orange to the pipework and doors which helps to tone down the colour and still lets Bookers to retain there corporate identity that no-one really wants to take away from them.
We hope that residents in Brook Road are happy with this solution which I think is best for both party's and Bath.

Brickfields

We have asked that in any upgrade in the improvements to the play equipment at the Brickfields and that consideration is given to a purpose built Junior Basketball court and football area like the one that is at Newton Road in Twerton.

We have expressed our concern that the Brickfields has become run down and that it is in need of significant improvements.

Bath Press proposals to be released

As we told you a few weeks ago that Tesco were about in Westmoreland we can now confirm that we have heard from St James Developments who are the Agents working on Behalf of Tesco in Bath asking for a meeting with local councillors.

The meeting has been organised for early next week and we hope that we will be able to give residents more information on what is or is not happening on this site after this meeting. We are sure that residents would want to know what is going on and will report as much information as we are able to.

If you want to know more in the interim then please follow the link below.

Residents say No to new Paint Job

Furious residents in Brook Road have been contacting us with regard to a proposed new paint Job at Booker Cash and Carry. It seems that the company have decided to paint the building a bright orange colour that replaces the light green that is currently there.

We have now written to Booker to express our concern and have asked them to tone down their colour scheme. If you wish to comment then please contact Booker Cash and Carry on the Link below.

New Building works start at Bathwick Tyres

Works has at long last started on the site that was bought by Bathwick Tyres on the Lower Bristol Road next to their current workshops. Diggers and other machinery were this morning clearing the land that has been an eyesore for many years to make way for an expansion of the very busy Bathwick Tyres business on the Lower Bristol Road.

Work has been held up on this site for a number of years for important ecology work and the clearing and relocation of a badger set.

We are pleased that this work has now started and look forward to see a clean and tidy entrance to Bath along this road.

Works move ahead at Student building

Works seem to be moving on a quite a pace at the new purpose built student accommodation on the Lower Bristol Road beside the current Waterside court.

It is understood that this new 320 bed unit will be open for the new Summer term in September 2009 and it is good to see that this derelict land is now being used and not left abandoned waste ground. The accommodation will not only house new students but some 2nd and 3rd year ones thus easing the pressure on family homes in the area.

Many Students make a useful contribution to the local economy and we hope that this new building operated by unite will be as successful as the current waterside court.

Council inaction causes accident

A semi-abandoned car park next to the former Moravian Church on Coronation Avenue in Westmoreland is at the centre of a row over access and safety between local residents and the Council.

The land was originally laid out as a car park for the church which has since been sold to a development company who intend to build flats on the site. The land was originally secured by gates but the Council ordered the removal of the gates saying that the area must be left open for access to the public right of way which runs alongside. This has lead to the car park being used locally as an informal parking area – cars awaiting repair are also being left there.

The use of this car park is now becoming a source of irritation to local residents and on Friday 3rd October at around 5.15 p.m. an accident was caused when a taxi suddenly veered towards the car park and hit another car. Paramedics were called to attend to the female driver, whilst the taxi driver disappeared.

Local Councillor Lynda Hedges (Liberal Democrat, Westmoreland) said:

“I have on several occasions asked the Cabinet member to do something about locking the gates of this piece of land beside the former Moravian Church. I feel that a ‘stopping up order’ would be an appropriate response to the danger to pedestrians and road users. However I have had no response from him despite alerting him to this danger over a month ago.

“This accident could have been prevented if the Cabinet member responsible had listened to local Councillors and residents about the need for the gates to be closed to prevent irresponsible driving and parking in this area.”

Councillor Sharon Ball (Liberal Democrat, Westmoreland) added:

“Local residents are hopping mad about this accident. Thanks to the Council leaving this land open as a free-for-all parking area, pedestrians and road users are being put at risk by dangerous driving. Surely it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured.”

Dransfield Way

Many residents have contacted us with regard to this road now being open to Traffic and many have commented that it is very dangerous. The Road was opened due to a glitch in the planning order issued in 2001 which has caused the problem.

The law states that the road way has to be opened for a period of 6 months before it can be closed pertinently which is the intention of the Council. As councillors we have asked for road to be closed in the interim under Highway safety legislation but we have to be careful how this is applied or an objection could lead to a permanent closure being turned down by the secretary of State.

We understand that council officers are visiting the site this week and investigating what can be done here to resolve the problem. We would ask residents to be patient for a few more days in which we hope to have this matter resolved.

School Playing Field getting closer to a reality

The prospect of a School playing field at the rear of Oldfield Park Junior School may soon become a reality. Bath & North East Somerset Council are in the final stages of securing the land from private land holders that will finally make this project happen.

The thanks for brining this forward has to be with the parents and the Governors at the School who have worked hard on this matter for a long time.

It will be good that the Children of this school who have for generations not had a playing field will finally have this facility that others take for granted.

Westmoreland PACT date set

A meeting of the Westmoreland PACT ( partnerships and communities together ) will take place on Thursday 27th November at 7.30 in Oldfield Park Baptist Church.
All residents are welcome to this first meeting that is sponsored by the Police the Local authority and other statutory agencies.

The meeting will set out to identify what problems there are over the area and will then vote on the three top priorities that a panel of the agencies will take away and try to resolve one of them.
Mr Wali Rahman, the Student Community Liaison Officer for Bath & North East Somerset Council will also be in attendance at the meeting and will join the panel.
So if you have an issue then please come along and put your case to the meeting.
